Founded in 1966 as the High Institute of Arts, it merged three artistic institutions: the Tirana State Conservatory, the Higher School of Fine Arts, and the High School for Actors “Aleksander Moisiu”. In 1991, the High Institute of Arts was promoted to university level and renamed Academy of Arts. On October 12, 2009, the President of the Republic of Albania, Bamir Topi awarded the Academy of Arts the "Grand Master Order".[3]
The Academy of Arts comprises three faculties:
The contribution of the Art Academy to the Albanian cultural life is well affirmed. The artists trained in this institution have often become well known in dance, music, theater, film, and television in Albania and abroad. Also, the teaching staff and associates of the Art Academy are well known musicologists, instrument players, painters, sculptors, theatre, film, and television directors, actors, stage designers, and choreographers. Most have won artistic and life achievement awards for their creative work. The tradition and quality of training in classical music and classical ballet are well established and particularly strong due to historic ties with the Russian School of Ballet and Classical Music.
Since its creation until 1991 the High Institute of Arts was led by a "Director". From 1997 up to now, it is directed by a "Rector".
